The Story Behind the Motif

The “Gancho Zapoteco” (Zapotec Hook Motif) is one of the most ancient and meaningful symbols of Zapotec art and architecture.

Found in the carved stone walls of Mitla and Monte Albán, this motif reflects the movement of life, the balance of natural forces, and the connection between earth and sky.

In Zapotec cosmology, the stepped lines represent life’s stages, while the hook marks transformation and renewal — a reminder that every ending is a new beginning.

The design embodies energy, flow, and harmony — principles that continue to guide Zapotec artisans today.

“Each hook in the pattern tells a story of time, movement, and rebirth — a reminder that life flows in continuous cycles.”
